A few notes on violence, sexism and labour in the arts.
Art is not an innocent field.
In September 2018, choreographer Jan Fabre was publicly accused by 20 of former Troubleyn (Fabre's Company) performers, actors and collaborators of blackmail and violence, often resulting in sexual abuse, harassment and many other violent dynamics, mainly addressed to womxn.
In Belgium, a country known for widely funding artistic research and live arts, these testimonies have led to the opening of discussions around the system of artistic production more in general, and the circulating sexism within it.
In Italy, instead, and in spite of the critical situation of the artistic field, the opportunity was taken to not only fund Fabre's work, but allow it to tour and ultimately praise him by awarding a UBU Prize (one of the most prestigious art awards in the country) to one of the main actors of one of his works (not discussing the merit of the actor, we note here that it would have been possible to reward him through other works in which he was featured this year). Several theatre critics (a majority of which is white, male, cisgender) have spent a great amount of energy defending the choreographer and accusing, not without aggressiveness, those who are raising the issue of assuming a position of censorship.
In Belgium, the ones who reported Fabre's violence have done so by building a collective path, portraying the case of Troubleyn not as an exception, but using it as a base to expose the relationship between sexual harassment and low wages, sexism and abuse of power in systems of production.
A systemic vision that we stand by.
As performers, art workers, activists*, we are also interested in articulating around this case to address some issues that mark our doing as well as systems that regulate relationships of labour.
Firstly, we are looking at the link between violence, sexism and work precariousness.
In Italy, the lack of welfare for performing arts workers worsens an increasingly difficult situation, where funds for festivals, theatres, companies and artists who do research-oriented work are being cut widely. This economic precariousness makes us more vulnerable, therefore more exposed in professional relationships.
Structures and relations of power are one of the main systemic issues we are wanting to look at: are there (can there be) symmetrical working relationships within the multifaceted landscape of cultural production? Are the relationships between curators and artists symmetrical? Between programmers and artists? Between programmers and critics? Artists and critics? Between directors and performers?
In other words: who is systemically fragile? And who is exempt from power relations that condition the space one takes up in the public sphere?
The language that is used in absolving Fabre on the basis of the fact that he is “a great artist” are evidently aiming to solidify the patriarchal figure of the “genius-artist”: this seems to us a dangerous, obsolete and conservative discourse, that should find no space.
We are also wanting to dismantle the argument for which suggesting that this discourse is problematic (to say the least) is equivalent to censorship. The only censorship here is the one that is silencing violence, that chooses to not recognize the words of who has done the labour of exposing abuse. The focus is not on the evaluation of the art works, but on looking at the practices and dynamics that constitute the making.
We do not censor, we put our bodies on stage, we talk about sexuality and desire, we actively question the binaries, we expose ourselves with all our skin. The point is not censorship, the point is to dismantle violent behaviors and practices that have become ritualized, taken for granted and seemingly indispensable. Is it (really) necessary to be violent to create? Is it really not possible to create otherwise? This posture sounds to us like a romanticization of violence. The qualification of 'artist' cannot be a seal of privilege, it cannot authorize oppressive power dynamics in exchange for product quality: we need to open a discourse on how privilege is produced and reproduced in cultural practices.
The discourses circulating around the Fabre-case concern us because they are dealing with economies, power relations, productive systems, hegemonic representations, postures and ambiguities of labour in the arts.
It is perhaps curious to observe how the defensiveness around the Fabre-case has come mainly by white, cis male critics. Why do they empathize more with Fabre than with those who accuse him? Collectively shaking patriarchal authority could (should) be recognized as a practice, if not liberating, at least frictioning against toxic masculinity, for everyone. But no. Wondering why it's not is both a rhetorical question and an invitation to take a systemic look at the Italian cultural landscape in which we are practicing.
Art, artistic practices, cultural making are not neutral nor innocent terrains.
It is neither a zone of privilege nor of exceptionality: it is made up of precariousness, unpaid work, political and cultural hegemonies, asymmetrical relations, competitive, vertical, patriarchal, narcissistic and heteronormative architectures. It is not separated from the world, but interconnected. It is therefore for us a space of conflict, where we can question the existing and try something else. As artists who are womxn/queer/trans/non-binary/faggots, we are very much acquainted with the violence – both subtle and explicit - that is exerted on our bodies, and on our words when we speak, in an attempt to silence us both inside and outside art spaces.
There is no need to reach a verdict here and we are not invoking justicialist actions: claiming guarantism is therefore out of place, because what we want to point out is the interweaving of social relations, toxic masculinity, the construction of subalternity, the violence that nourishes family and the relations between genders.
We do not accept to be lectured on what happens on our bodies, we do not accept to witness the silencing and invisibilization of those who choose to report violence.
We want to uncover those systemic mechanisms that continue, undisturbed, to feed techniques of violence, precariousness and toxicity. We are inviting you to listen. Otherwise, please move aside.
